Bing Bang Boom

DSCN2365Happy little friday and dogs on thursday!  Gretchen is one of many pets who has no use for fireworks.  Luckily, unlike one of my sister’s departed labs, she doesn’t freak out and go sit on the end table behind a Tiffany lamp (yes I’m serious, and no there’s no photo), but she does yap and race from one end of the house to the other, trying to find what’s making the noise.

There are plenty of resources out there with advice on how to weather fireworks with a fearful dog, but we’re going to try playing the 1812 Overture, one of my personal favorites.  Poor girl… she’ll likely have to endure Mama’s own perforamance of such.   (I played the oboe from age 11 through college and beyond and am lucky to have a few recordings of my performances.)

Let me at those boom-booms!

Do you have a fireworks-sensitive pet?  If so, how do you help them through it?

Happy 4th to those in the US, whether you like fireworks or not.

Well you know Beau is scared to death of ‘big bangs’ – thunder, fireworks, anything big – good thing he isn’t a hunting dog. Anyway – we leave them inside with the tv on to a music channel. We do keep the music up fairly loud and he does okay. He curls up in his chair.

Hopefully your girls will do okay. g

It is a toss-up as to which is worse, fireworks or thunderstorms!!! We have a lot of snuggles, and play to TV REAL LOUD!!!

    Good luck

[…] Happy dogs on thursday, little friday and thankful thursday!   I’ve actually altered my fireworks distraction plan from yesterday’s microwave popcorn fest, but you can read more about that on the girls’ blog. […]

Monty used to freak out, but now Morgan is the only one who is afraid of the noise. Noah, like GG, barks at the booms.

I close blinds, turn on lots of lights so the don’t see flashes (works with lightening storms, too). Then I turn either music or Tv or both on extra loud to drown out the outside noise.

A party with snacks that keep their mind on eating also helps.

Poor Gretchen! I hope she makes it through the weekend alright!

The cats don’t like loud noises, but luckily none of the fireworks are very close to our house, so we just hear the distant booms.

Have a very happy 4th of July extra long weekend!!

  6. Phantom, Thunder, and Ciara Says:

Phantom used to be terribly bothered by fireworks, but he doesn’t hear them so well any more. And with age, he seems to be OK as long as he is inside. Nothing fazes Thunder, and we will see with Ciara. She was just a pup last 4th and didn’t seem to mind them. But then this spring she has shown signs of not liking the thunderstorms here.

Hopefully there won’t be any silly humans near us setting off fireworks at their homes.

Hope everyone there is OK with the noises.

Um, did you know that I also played the oboe from age 11 through high school senior year? Good luck with the fireworks aversion thing. I’m so relieved that our pets are completely not affected by these things…since in our neighborhood they shoot off fireworks at the most random of “occasions.”

  8. Maggie and Mitch Says:

I, Miss Maggie, HATE fireworks and find comfort is being velcroed to my mom for hours! Mitch isn’t as bothered by them as I am but he doesn’t really like them either. We’ve heard of the thundershirts but never tried them and we’ve also heard about the bach flower remedies but haven’t tried that either. We kinda just wait it out and hope that the hoomans get bored of shooting them off and quit!
Our mom LOVES the 1812 Overture too! She loves all of Tchaikovsky’s work!

    Love ya lots,
    Maggie and Mitch

Zeus isn’t a fan of much that goes boom ever since lightening struck next door… he has to get AsCloseAsPossible to us and hangs out nearby…

  10. scrabblequeen Says:

We aren’t too keen on fireworks either, but don’t totally freak out. We DO like mom to stay home with us, so we can make sure she’s safe.

Thor’s glad our suggestion is going to good use. He’d hate to have Sissy tortured with the smell of wonderful foods she can’t eat.

  12. Bubblesknits Says:

This will be our first true experience with Micro and fireworks. The last time we had any near the house was New Year’s. He was so little then, he really didn’t care. If it existed outside of his playpen, it wasn’t worth worrying about. 😉 We’ll see what happens this year, though. Dr. Tooth is already planning on how to out-do the neighbor across the lake that gave him a run for his money last year. /eyeroll/

  13. Jed & Abby in MerryLand Says:

Best wishes for getting through the fireworks excitement, Gretchen. Maybe you could visit the reincarnated Tank’s blog and get some meditation pointers?
